President Bola Tinubu has officially flagged off the construction of the 125-kilometre Akwanga–Jos section of the Akwanga–Kaduna–Jos–Bauchi–Gombe–Biu–Maiduguri Superhighway, reaffirming his administration’s commitment to improving Nigeria’s road infrastructure and regional connectivity.
The groundbreaking ceremony took place in Akwanga, Nasarawa State, on Tuesday, where the President also commissioned the newly dualised Akwanga Township Road and a modern underpass constructed by the Nasarawa State Government.
Representing President Tinubu at the event was the National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Professor Nentawe Yilwatda, who said the project reflects the Federal Government’s Renewed Hope Agenda aimed at driving economic growth through strategic infrastructure development.
The Akwanga–Jos stretch is the first phase of the ambitious 700-kilometre Akwanga–Kaduna–Jos–Bauchi–Gombe–Biu–Maiduguri Superhighway, a major transport corridor expected to improve connectivity between North-Central and North-East Nigeria.
Speaking during the ceremony, Minister of Works David Umahi disclosed that President Tinubu had approved the immediate release of ₦111 billion to mobilise contractors and ensure the project commences without delay. He noted that the Ministry of Finance had already begun processing the funds.
According to the President, the superhighway is designed to ease the movement of people and goods, enhance road safety, stimulate trade and agriculture, attract investments, and strengthen national integration by linking key states across the country.
The project corridor will be executed in phases, beginning with the 125-kilometre Akwanga–Jos section before extending through Bauchi, Gombe, Biu and finally Maiduguri.
The event was attended by the Minister of Works, David Umahi, Plateau State Governor Caleb Mutfwang, Gombe State Governor Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya, lawmakers, traditional rulers, and other senior government officials.
In addition to the federal highway project, President Tinubu commissioned the dualised Akwanga Township Road and a newly completed underpass delivered by the Nasarawa State Government. The projects are expected to ease traffic congestion, improve urban mobility, and support economic activities within Akwanga.
The Federal Government has described the superhighway as one of the flagship legacy infrastructure projects under the Tinubu administration, expressing confidence that its completion will boost regional development, improve transportation efficiency, and create new economic opportunities for millions of Nigerians living along the corridor.
