A 12-year-old girl, Mercy Kefas, has been rescued by the police in Adamawa State after she went missing in Guyuk Local Government Area and was reportedly sighted travelling with an unidentified woman.
The girl’s disappearance triggered a search after her mother, Mrs Mary Felix, reported the incident at the Guyuk Divisional Police Headquarters on Friday, September 18, 2026.
According to the police, the child was later sighted in the company of an unknown woman heading towards the Balanga/Talasse axis, prompting security operatives to intensify efforts to locate her.
The Adamawa State Police Command said it immediately circulated information about the missing girl to neighbouring communities and relevant formations as officers moved to track her whereabouts.
The search paid off when the girl was found around the Talasse border area, where a 20-year-old woman suspected of abducting her was also arrested.
The suspect was identified as Jamila Yusuf, a resident of Lafiya Village in Balanga Local Government Area of Gombe State.
Police said the girl has since been reunited with her family, while the suspect remains in custody.
The State Commissioner of Police, CP Kabir Umar Hassan, ordered the State Criminal Investigation Department to take over the case and conduct a discreet investigation into the circumstances surrounding the girl’s disappearance.
The command said the investigation would help unravel what happened to the child and determine the suspect’s alleged role in the incident.
The police urged parents and guardians to remain vigilant and promptly report missing children and suspicious movements to security agencies.
The command also appealed to members of the public to provide timely information that could help prevent child abduction and other crimes in the state.
