Twenty prospective National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members who were reportedly abducted along the Owerri-Onitsha Road in Imo State have reportedly regained their freedom.
The corps members were among graduates travelling from Ibadan, Oyo State, to different NYSC orientation camps in the South-East and South-South when gunmen attacked two buses around Umunoha in Mbaitoli Local Government Area on Thursday, October 1.
The Imo State Police Command had confirmed the attack and launched a search-and-rescue operation, while the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, later deployed the Deputy Inspector-General of Police in charge of Operations, Shehu Nadada, to coordinate efforts to rescue the victims.
Reports on October 5 said the families were still waiting for the release of the victims, while the kidnappers had reportedly reduced their ransom demand from ₦50 million per victim to ₦5 million each. The total demand was consequently reduced from ₦1 billion to ₦100 million.
A fresh report circulating online on Wednesday, October 7, however, claims that the 20 abducted corps members have now regained their freedom.
