A 20-year-old driver, identified as Olumide Olusola, has been arrested after a police sergeant was allegedly knocked down and dragged underneath a vehicle during a stop-and-search operation in Egbeda, Lagos State.
The incident occurred on September 26, 2026, along Olugbede Street, Egbeda, when police officers conducting a stop-and-search operation flagged down a Lexus ES 350 driven by Olusola.
According to the Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Fatai Tijani, the driver initially stopped but allegedly sped off as Sergeant Johnson Okediji approached the driver’s side.
The officer was knocked down and dragged underneath the vehicle for several metres despite efforts by police officers and passers-by to make the driver stop.
Sergeant Okediji sustained multiple fractures and serious head injuries. He was rushed to a nearby hospital and later referred to the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital, LASUTH, where he was pronounced dead on arrival. His remains were deposited at the Mainland Hospital Mortuary for preservation and autopsy.
The driver was eventually chased and arrested, while the vehicle was recovered by the police.
Speaking after his arrest, Olusola denied deliberately knocking down the officer, claiming that the vehicle’s brakes failed.
“I was trying to stop the vehicle. The vehicle didn’t stop. That’s when the vehicle hit another vehicle in front. That’s when I fell down with the person sitting next to me,” he said.
Olusola, who said he sells phones, gadgets and laptops, added that he had noticed problems with the brakes and had taken the Lexus to a mechanic the previous day. He also claimed that the vehicle belonged to his mother, who had acquired it the previous month.
The police said investigation into the circumstances surrounding Sergeant Okediji’s death is ongoing.
