Switzerland will take on Algeria in the Round of 32 at the 2026 FIFA World Cup on Thursday at BC Place, with a place in the quarterfinals against either Colombia or Ghana at stake.
The Swiss finished top of Group B after recovering from an opening defeat to Qatar with successive wins over Bosnia and Herzegovina and Canada. Their strong finish earned them what appears to be a more favorable knockout tie, although Algeria presents a stern challenge.
Algeria advanced as one of the best third-placed teams from Group J after a campaign that reflected both their strengths and inconsistencies. Following an opening loss to Argentina, the North Africans defeated Jordan before securing qualification with an entertaining 3-3 draw against Austria.
Neither side is considered among the tournament favorites, but both have a realistic opportunity to reach the last eight. Switzerland has not progressed to the World Cup quarterfinals since 1954, while Algeria is aiming to reach that stage for the first time in its history.
Switzerland enters the contest as the slight favorite after showing improved attacking form during the group stage.
