From the courtroom to the boardroom and now the political arena, the businessman, lawyer and politician is returning to the Rivers governorship contest under the NDC platform
Chief Barrister Dumo Lulu-Briggs is not a newcomer to the intersection of business, law and politics.
For decades, his name has been associated with the oil and gas industry, corporate leadership and political contests in Rivers State. Now, ahead of the 2027 Rivers State governorship election, Lulu-Briggs is once again stepping into the political arena, this time as the governorship candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC).
His emergence adds another dimension to what promises to be a closely watched political contest in one of Nigeria’s most economically strategic states.
Lulu-Briggs trained as a lawyer and was called to the Nigerian Bar in 1986. He holds an LLB from Ahmadu Bello University and postgraduate legal training from the United Kingdom.
But beyond the legal profession, he built a substantial career in Nigeria’s oil and gas industry.
He is the Chairman of Platform Petroleum Limited, an indigenous oil and gas company, and is also associated with the DLB Group, with interests spanning oil and gas, maritime and other business activities.
His corporate journey has also been linked to Moni Pulo Limited, the indigenous oil company founded by his late father, High Chief Dr. O.B. Lulu-Briggs.
The Lulu-Briggs family has therefore maintained a long-standing presence in Nigeria’s indigenous oil and gas business, particularly in the Niger Delta.
Lulu-Briggs’ political profile cannot easily be separated from his business background.
As an entrepreneur operating in the oil-producing Niger Delta, he has spent years around one of the country’s most important economic sectors — a sector that has simultaneously generated enormous wealth and remained at the centre of debates over environmental degradation, community development, resource control and economic opportunity.
His supporters point to his private-sector experience as part of the argument for his suitability for public office.
However, as with every businessman entering politics, his corporate interests and political ambitions will inevitably attract public scrutiny, particularly in a state where the oil industry plays a central role in the economy.
Lulu-Briggs’ political ambitions are not new.
His official biography records that he contested for the Akuku-Toru Federal Constituency in 1992 under the Social Democratic Party.
He later served as National Assistant Legal Adviser of the Grassroot Democratic Party and subsequently contested the Rivers State governorship election in 2003.
His political journey continued through subsequent election cycles, including an attempt to secure the Peoples Democratic Party governorship ticket in 2015.
The 2027 election therefore represents another chapter in a political career that has stretched across several decades.
Lulu-Briggs enters the 2027 contest under the banner of the Nigeria Democratic Congress.
His emergence as the party’s governorship candidate has already generated legal attention. In July 2026, a Federal High Court sitting in Port Harcourt dismissed a suit challenging his emergence after the plaintiff discontinued the case.
With the legal challenge no longer standing, Lulu-Briggs has continued with his campaign for the governorship.
His campaign has presented him as a candidate seeking a different development direction for Rivers State, with emphasis on economic expansion, investment and development.
For Lulu-Briggs, the central challenge is translating his experience in the private sector into a convincing public-sector agenda.
Rivers State is home to major oil and gas assets, a strategic coastline, ports, extensive waterways and a large population whose economic fortunes remain closely connected to the performance of the state’s economy.
The state also faces long-standing questions surrounding infrastructure, employment, human capital development, environmental concerns, security and the relationship between government and communities in oil-producing areas.
The 2027 contest will therefore put the candidates’ records, programmes, networks and capacity for governance under public examination.
Lulu-Briggs is frequently described in public discourse as one of the wealthy businessmen from Rivers State, with some online reports putting his personal fortune at around $500 million.
However, there is no sufficiently authoritative publicly available financial disclosure establishing that exact figure. His extensive business interests are documented, but an estimated net worth should not be presented as an independently verified fact.
What is less disputed is his long involvement in the oil and gas business and his position within one of Nigeria’s prominent indigenous business families.
Dumo Lulu-Briggs now faces a familiar but demanding task: convincing Rivers voters that experience in law and business can be effectively translated into governance.
His political history gives him familiarity with the state’s electoral terrain, while his business career provides him with experience in corporate management and the oil and gas sector.
But ultimately, the 2027 election will place his record, promises and political programme alongside those of the other candidates before the people of Rivers State.
For Lulu-Briggs, the journey from lawyer to oil executive, businessman and political contender has reached another decisive point.
In 2027, Rivers voters will decide whether that journey should culminate in the Government House, Port Harcourt.
