2027 Exams: NECO May Hold Exams Before WAEC, But No Official Plan To Scrap WAEC

A viral claim that the National Examinations Council (NECO) will conduct its examinations before the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) in 2027 has sparked reactions among Nigerians online.

The claim also suggests that NECO results will be released ahead of WAEC results to enable students to begin university admission processes without delays and that students may no longer be required to sit for WAEC from 2027.

However, there is currently no official confirmation that WAEC will be scrapped or that students will no longer be required to sit for the examination.

WAEC’s official website still contains examination requirements for candidates registering for the 2026 and 2027 WASSCE. It states that such candidates will sit a minimum of eight and a maximum of nine subjects, including English Language and General Mathematics as the available core subjects.

The Federal Government has also previously referred to both WAEC and NECO examinations in its 2027 education plans, including discussions on examination fees for both bodies.

A proposed 2027 national examination calendar published recently does place the NECO SSCE ahead of the WAEC WASSCE, with NECO proposed for April to May and WAEC for May to June. However, the publication clearly states that the dates are only proposed and remain subject to confirmation by the respective examination bodies.
