Presidential Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, has cast doubt on former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi’s promise to serve only one term if elected president.
Onanuga questioned Obi’s credibility, citing his political history and alleging that the former Anambra State governor had once pledged loyalty to the All Progressives Grand Alliance before later leaving the party.
The presidential aide also accused Obi of frequently switching political platforms over the years.
In a post shared on his X handle, Onanuga wrote: “If you believe Peter Obi’s promise to serve only one term as president, you’ll believe anything.
“Consider his record: while in APGA, he publicly placed himself under a self-imposed curse, vowing never to leave the party that made him governor. He gave his word to the Ikemba, even on his deathbed, pledging loyalty and fidelity to APGA.
“By his own actions, Peter Obi has shown that his word cannot be trusted. His promises are as fleeting as his political allegiances.”
Recall that Obi recently defected to the Nigeria Democratic Congress alongside Rabiu Kwankwaso from the African Democratic Congress.
Both politicians are expected to contest on a joint ticket under the NDC platform, with Kwankwaso tipped as Obi’s running mate.
At its National Convention held in Abuja on May 9, the NDC announced that its presidential ticket would be zoned to the South for a single term before returning to the North in 2031.
Political observers believe the move is aimed at assuring northern stakeholders that Obi would honour his one-term promise if elected.
