A chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, and aspirant for Abeokuta South Federal Constituency, has urged Nigerians to take greater responsibility in shaping the country’s future by electing credible leaders in the 2027 general elections.
The aspirant, Amuzu, made the call during an engagement with residents of Abeokuta South Federal Constituency, where he stressed that democracy would only deliver meaningful benefits if citizens make informed voting decisions.
He expressed concern over Nigeria’s pace of development compared to other countries, saying he remains optimistic ahead of his 2027 political ambition.
Amuzu lamented what he described as infrastructural and institutional deficits in Nigeria, noting that his experiences abroad exposed him to better governance systems and development models.
“I feel ashamed when I travel out and see the level of development in other countries. Nigerians may not truly enjoy democracy until citizens begin to vote the right individuals into office as both a personal and collective responsibility,” he said.
He emphasised that sustainable national development depends on electing leaders with competence and integrity, adding that citizens must also support such leadership to achieve meaningful progress.
The aspirant further argued that developed nations were built on visionary leadership and strong institutions, insisting that Nigeria’s transformation must be driven by its citizens.
He urged residents to prioritise national interest over sentiments, warning against voting based on religion, political affiliation, or financial inducement.
“As we approach 2027, we must shun the politics of rice and money. I am here to serve, not to make empty promises. Together, we can make a difference,” he said.
Amuzu also lamented what he described as a recurring trend where “the worst of us have ruled the best of us,” attributing it to a lack of integrity and patriotism in leadership choices.
He questioned continued support for underperforming leaders despite unmet expectations, urging Nigerians to use their votes to demand accountability.
The aspirant also highlighted persistent challenges such as poor electricity supply, inadequate potable water, and bad roads, describing them as basic government responsibilities that should not be politicised.
He encouraged eligible Nigerians to take advantage of the ongoing voter registration exercise to obtain their Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) and participate actively in the electoral process ahead of 2027.
