ABEOKUTA, OGUN STATE — Scores of women traditional worshippers in Abeokuta, Ogun State, on Friday took to the streets and visited several revered shrines in a spiritual procession aimed at securing the release of schoolchildren and teachers abducted in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State.
The gathering, which attracted traditionalists from different parts of Egbaland, was led by the Iyalode of the Isese community, Dr. Omolara Fashola-MacGregor. Participants dressed in white attire and carried out prayers and traditional rites at various cultural and spiritual landmarks across the city.
The women visited notable sites including Olumo Rock, Lisabi Agbongbo-Akala Shrine, Sodeke Shrine, and Itoku Shrine, where they offered prayers and invoked ancestral spirits and deities for the safe return of the kidnapped victims.
Speaking during the procession, Fashola-MacGregor said the spiritual exercise was organized in response to the growing insecurity affecting communities across the country, particularly the recent abduction of pupils and teachers in Oyo State.
She noted that while security agencies continue efforts to rescue the victims, traditional institutions also have a role to play in seeking peace and protection for society through spiritual means.
According to her, the women prayed for the release of the abducted schoolchildren and teachers within seven days, expressing confidence that their spiritual intervention would contribute positively to ongoing rescue efforts.
The traditional worshippers also offered prayers for Nigeria’s leaders, security agencies, and traditional rulers, urging them to intensify efforts to tackle kidnapping, banditry, and other violent crimes threatening public safety.
