Abia Tertiary Sports Fiesta Begins November As Otti Receives Unity Torch

Abia State Governor, Alex Otti, has received the Torch of Unity ahead of the second edition of the state’s Tertiary Institutions Sports Fiesta, scheduled to hold from November 3 to 6, 2026.

The ceremony, held on Monday at the Michael Okpara Auditorium premises in Umuahia, marked the commencement of activities ahead of the sporting competition, which is expected to bring together students from tertiary institutions across the state.

The four-day event aims to promote inter-institutional relations, identify sporting talents and encourage healthy competition among students.

The Commissioner for Information, Prince Okey Kanu, disclosed this while briefing journalists at Government House, Umuahia, on the outcome of the State Executive Council meeting presided over by Otti.

The sports fiesta forms part of the state government’s efforts to promote youth development and sporting activities within its tertiary education system.

The competition is expected to provide students with opportunities to showcase their athletic abilities while fostering teamwork and interaction among participating institutions.

The second edition follows the inaugural event held in 2025. However, details of the participating institutions and the sporting categories scheduled for this year’s competition were not provided in the announcement.
