The Governing Council of Abia State University (ABSU), Uturu, has inaugurated a Search Team to commence the process of recruiting the institution’s ninth substantive Vice-Chancellor.
The Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Council, Rt. Hon. Dr. Agwu U. Agwu, inaugurated the committee during a brief ceremony held at the Council Chamber of the university.
Agwu said the constitution of the Search Team was in compliance with Section 12(2)(b) of the Abia State University Law, which mandates the establishment of a committee to identify and nominate suitable candidates for consideration by the Governing Council for appointment as Vice-Chancellor.
According to him, the members were carefully selected based on their proven track records and to represent the various interest groups stipulated by the law.
He urged the committee members to work in unity and remain guided by transparency, diligence, and extensive consultations throughout the exercise.
“You are to approach this responsibility as a formidable team, while embracing transparency, diligence, and wide consultations in the task of searching for the most qualified academics who possess the commitment and capacity to lead a digital technology-driven university like ABSU in the 21st century,” he said.
The Pro-Chancellor congratulated the members on their appointment and charged them to identify a competent and visionary academic who would effectively succeed the outgoing Vice-Chancellor.
He also commended the current Vice-Chancellor, Professor Ndukwe J. Okeudo, for what he described as his dedication and commitment since assuming office, adding that his administration had repositioned the university on a fast track of development in both academic and administrative spheres.
Responding on behalf of the committee, the Chairman of the Search Team, Professor Onwubiko Dike, thanked the Governing Council for the confidence reposed in the members and assured that the team would discharge its responsibilities diligently.
Other members of the Search Team are Professor Anthony Obike; Professor Mary Oluchi Iwuagwu, Senate Representative; Professor Sam Agu, Senate Representative; Dr. Osita Igbe, Congregation Representative; and Dr. Uchenna Kalu, Representative of the Registrar, who will serve as Secretary.
