Nigerian singer Adekunle Gold has disclosed that genotype compatibility was an important consideration in his relationship with his wife, Simi.
The singer made this known during an appearance on the One54 Africa Podcast while speaking about sickle cell disease and the need for greater awareness of genotype compatibility.
Adekunle Gold said couples should know their genotypes before making decisions about marriage and having children.
He particularly stressed the potential implications for children when partners have incompatible genotypes.
“There is so much awareness that needs to be done. If you have sickle cells forget about love, you cant do it because it makes no sense. You are about to bring a child into the world and they are about to be sickly, it’s makes no sense.”
Reflecting on his own marriage, the singer said he and Simi established their genotype status early in their relationship.
According to him, they discovered that Simi is AA and that their genotypes were compatible.
He added that he would not have proceeded with the marriage if she had an SS genotype.
“I wouldn’t have married my wife if she was SS. When we met the first thing we did was know our genotype and we match. So she is AA”
His remarks have renewed discussion around genotype testing, sickle cell awareness and the role genetic compatibility can play in family planning.
