Nigeria’s Super Eagles began their 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign with a nervy 2-1 comeback win over Madagascar at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium, Uyo, on Friday.
Madagascar took an early lead after capitalising on a quick transition to beat goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali and silence the home crowd.
Nigeria, however, responded before the break, with debutant George Ilenikhena scoring in the first minute of added time to restore parity.
The equaliser ensured both sides went into the interval level at 1-1, after Madagascar had threatened to frustrate the hosts with their early advantage.
The Super Eagles stepped up the pressure after the restart, with captain Wilfred Ndidi and Alex Iwobi helping Nigeria gain greater control in midfield.
The sustained pressure eventually produced the winning goal when another debutant, Moses Usor, found the decisive finish in the second half to complete Nigeria’s comeback.
The 2-1 victory gives Eric Chelle’s side three points from their opening Group L fixture and a winning start to their qualifying campaign.
Nigeria will travel to face Guinea-Bissau on Tuesday, September 29, while Madagascar will host Tanzania on the same day.
The Super Eagles began the opening qualifiers without striker Victor Osimhen, who was ruled out through injury.
Nigeria sit second in Group L with three points, level with leaders Guinea-Bissau, who are ahead on goal difference. Tanzania and Madagascar are yet to register a point.
