Barely one month and two weeks after a gas leakage affected a secondary school in Ijebu Ode, another leakage has occurred on Friday, affecting over 100 students and teachers in the local government.
Recall that the first leakage, which happened on Wednesday, April 1, 2026, at Our Lady of Apostle Primary and Secondary schools (OLAS) affected and led to the admission of not less than thirty students and two teachers at the State General Hospital, Ijebu Ode.
Following this, Governor Dapo Abiodun ordered the immediate closure of the school and an investigation into the cause of the incident to prevent any future occurrence.
The governor also directed the opening of a situation room at the General Hospital, Ijebu-Ode, which offered free treatment to other students and residents of the impacted areas such as Makalewo, Ogbogbo, Molipa, Igbegba, Ikoto and Oke-Aje market.
However, another gas leakage has occurred, affecting over 100 students and teacher of the same Our Lady of Apostle Secondary School, Epe Garage, Ijebu Ode; Anglican Girls Grammar School, Obalende; among others.
In a viral video on Facebook, students were seen running out of one of the affected schools with teachers assisting those who had fainted into vehicles for medical attention.
DAILY POST learnt that the affected students were taken to the Ogun State Hospital, Ijebu Ode, and other private medical facilities within the town.
Confirming the incident, the Ogun State Commissioner for Environment, Ola Oresanya, said necessary action is being taken by the Ministry of Education, OGEPA, Security agents, and the Local Government.
Oresanya, in a statement made available to newsmen, said air quality monitoring had recorded elevated methane levels in the area.
The statement reads, The Air Quality Monitoring Device installed at Ijebu Ode Grammar School has recorded elevated methane (CH₄) concentrations within its monitoring coverage area in Ijebu Ode, with peak readings of approximately 13,500 ppm in surrounding locations.
“The deployment of the Air Quality Monitoring device at Ijebu Ode Grammar School forms part of the State’s continuous environmental surveillance programme designed to provide early detection of abnormal air quality conditions and support timely public health interventions.
“The State Government will activate a multi-agency environmental and public health assessment team comprising environmental regulators, emergency response services, and technical air quality experts to determine the source of the emissions, assess spatial extent and exposure risk, and evaluate associated gasses such as hydrogen sulphide (H₂S), volatile organic compounds (VOCs), and other relevant air quality parameters.”
He urged residents to remain calm and continue normal activities, while avoiding open flames or ignition sources in areas where unusual gas odours are detected.
“Any symptoms such as dizziness, headaches, nausea, or respiratory discomfort should be promptly reported to nearby health facilities.
“The Ogun State Government remains fully committed to safeguarding lives, public health, and environmental integrity. Further verified updates will be communicated as investigations progress” the statement added.
