Senegalese-American singer Akon has challenged the popular perception that musicians are enormously wealthy, arguing that the lavish lifestyles and extravagant displays commonly seen on social media and in music videos do not reflect the financial reality of most artists.

In an interview with Hip Hop Eye, Akon explained that while the music industry is indeed a lucrative business, the bulk of the money flows to executives and those working behind the scenes rather than to the artists themselves.

He noted that artists are typically the last to receive payment within the industry’s financial structure, often ending up with the least despite being the most visible and celebrated figures.

He quipped that anyone seeking fame without financial reward should pursue a career as an artist, but those looking to build real wealth should instead set their sights on other roles within the music business such as producing, songwriting, management, talent representation, or music law areas he described as far more financially rewarding and often overlooked.
