“Alkali Declines Appointment” — Tinubu Seeks Senate Approval For Yusuf’s Law Reform Commission Nomination

President Bola Tinubu has appointed Professor Yusuf Mohammed Yusuf as a commissioner of the Nigerian Law Reform Commission, following the rejection of the appointment by Professor Fatima Alkali.

Alkali, who was initially nominated on June 2, 2025, declined the offer and did not appear before the Senate for screening. Her decision was officially communicated to the presidency.

During Wednesday’s plenary, a letter from President Tinubu was read, requesting the Senate to consider and approve Yusuf’s nomination in accordance with Section 21 of the Nigerian Law Reform Commission Act, 2022.

Senate President Godswill Akpabio has referred the matter to the Senate Committee on Judiciary, Human Rights, and Legal Matters for review. The committee will screen the nominee and present its report to the Senate for further action.
