A suspected member of a notorious agboro gang was reportedly beaten by an angry crowd and subsequently arrested after allegedly vandalizing a commercial driver’s vehicle in Rumosi, a busy area of Port Harcourt, Rivers State.
According to eyewitness, the incident occurred during the early hours of the day when the suspect allegedly confronted a driver over an undisclosed disagreement. The situation quickly escalated, leading to the suspect reportedly smashing the vehicle’s windscreen.
Witnesses said the driver raised an alarm immediately after the damage was done, attracting the attention of nearby motorists, traders, and residents. The crowd reportedly apprehended the suspect and subjected him to a severe beating before security operatives arrived at the scene.
A source familiar with the incident disclosed that the suspect is believed to be associated with a local agboro group known for harassing drivers and demanding illegal levies from transport operators in parts of the city.
“The man allegedly damaged the windscreen after an argument with the driver. People around the area became angry and caught him before the police arrived,” an eyewitness said.
Security personnel who responded to the scene reportedly rescued the suspect from the mob and took him into custody for further investigation.
The damaged vehicle was also inspected as authorities gathered evidence relating to the incident. No official statement had been released by the police at the time of filing this report, but investigations were said to be ongoing.
The incident has renewed concerns among residents and transport operators over the activities of street gangs and illegal revenue collectors operating in parts of Port Harcourt.
