The Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Joash Amupitan, SAN, has reiterated his commitment to ensuring credible elections and strengthening Nigeria’s democratic process.
Amupitan made the commitment when he received a delegation from the Okun Development Association (ODA), led by its President-General, Amb. Akenson Rotimi, during a courtesy visit to the commission’s headquarters in Abuja.
According to a statement posted on INEC’s official X handle, on Tuesday, July 28, Rotimi congratulated Amupitan on his appointment as chairman of the electoral body, describing it as recognition of his integrity, competence and track record of service.

The ODA president said Amupitan’s appointment had brought pride to the Okun community, which he described as a people known for producing individuals of “exceptional character and excellence.”
He also assured the INEC chairman of the continued prayers and support of the Okun people as he leads the commission in its efforts to strengthen Nigeria’s democracy.
Responding, Amupitan expressed appreciation to the association for the visit and its support since his appointment, explaining that official responsibilities had delayed his ability to receive the delegation.
The INEC chairman said he had not visited his hometown since assuming office due to the demands of leading the nation’s electoral institution.
Describing his appointment as “a call to service,” Amupitan said managing Nigeria’s electoral process requires commitment, integrity and impartiality.
He thanked the Okun community for their prayers and encouragement, noting that their support had remained a source of strength throughout his national assignment.
The INEC chairman also highlighted the challenges posed by misinformation and disinformation in the digital era, assuring that the commission would continue to perform its constitutional duties professionally and in line with the law.
“INEC remains committed to discharging its constitutional mandate professionally and in accordance with the law,” Amupitan said.
