Nine people, including seven schoolchildren, have been rescued after a flood swept through the Nibo–Isiagu Road in Awka, Anambra State, leaving one child missing.
The incident occurred in the early hours of Tuesday, September 22, 2026, when the victims were caught in the flood while travelling along the affected route.
Following a distress call, operatives of the Anambra State Police Command’s Safe School Unit mobilised to the area and rescued the seven schoolchildren and two adults with assistance of members of the community,
One other child involved in the incident remained missing as of the time of filing this report.
The command said it had commenced a search for the missing child in collaboration with community members and other relevant agencies.
The state Police Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, disclosed this in a statement on Tuesday.
Ikenga said the Commissioner of Police, Nnanna Oji Ama, had directed that the search and rescue operation be sustained and expanded until the missing child was found.
He said, “The Commissioner of Police has directed that the search and rescue operation be sustained and expanded.”
The police spokesman urged residents around the affected route to provide information that could assist in locating the missing child.
He also advised parents, guardians, school authorities and motorists to exercise caution when using flooded roads, bridges and waterways, particularly during heavy rainfall.
The command warned parents and guardians against allowing children to attempt crossing flooded or otherwise dangerous routes.
