The Anambra State Police Command has rescued an unidentified middle-aged man who was found unconscious by the roadside in Awka, in what authorities suspect may be a case of hard drug abuse.
According to a statement issued on Thursday by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, the victim was discovered by operatives attached to the B Division during a midday patrol on Tuesday, July 15, 2026, along Oby Okoli Avenue near the Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK) Temporary Site in Awka.
Ikenga said the man was lying unconscious with no visible signs of struggle or injuries indicating foul play.
The police operatives immediately evacuated him to the Police Hospital in Awka, where he is currently receiving medical treatment.
The command disclosed that a search conducted on the victim yielded no means of identification or mobile phone that could help trace his identity or contact his relatives.
According to the police, preliminary findings suggest that the man may have been under the influence of hard drugs, although investigations are still ongoing to establish his identity and locate his family members.
The Command described the incident as another reminder of the dangers associated with substance abuse and drug addiction, especially among young people.
It reaffirmed its commitment to the Police Campaign Against Cultism and Other Vices (POCACOV), stressing that the initiative will continue to promote preventive policing through public enlightenment, advocacy, and collaboration with relevant stakeholders to discourage drug abuse, cultism, and other social vices.
The police added that further updates on the victim’s condition and efforts to identify him would be communicated as investigations progress.
