The All Progressives Congress (APC) has won all 18 chairmanship seats in the Edo State local government election held today, Saturday, July 11.
The election was conducted by the Edo State Independent Electoral Commission (EDSIEC) across the state’s 18 local government areas to elect chairmen and councillors.
POLITICS NIGERIA reports that Governor Monday Okpebholo cast his vote at Ward 2, Udomi Primary School in Esan Central Local Government Area. He arrived at his polling unit at about 10:24 a.m., joined other voters in the queue and voted at exactly 10:40 a.m.
Speaking after voting, the governor praised the peaceful conduct of the election and the turnout of voters.
“This election is very peaceful, and it is going smoothly based on the feedback we are getting from the field,” Okpebholo said.
“The turnout is very high. This is a demonstration of grassroots democracy. It shows that our people are interested in choosing those who will administer the affairs of their local governments. By the grace of God, a winner will emerge at the end of today’s election,” he added.
With the announcement of the results, the APC secured victory in all 18 local government areas. A total of 12 political parties took part in the election. They included the APC, All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), Young Progressives Party (YPP), Accord Party (AP), Action Alliance (AA), African Action Congress (AAC), Allied Peoples Movement (APM), Action Democratic Party (ADP), Action People’s Party (APP), Peoples Redemption Party (PRP) and National Rescue Movement (NRM). Major opposition parties such as the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Labour Party (LP) and African Democratic Congress (ADC) did not field candidates for the polls.
