Nigeria’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations and Chairman of the UN Fifth Committee on Budgetary and Administrative Matters, Senator Jimoh Ibrahim, has urged Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde to take responsibility following the abduction of schoolchildren in the state, calling on him to apologise to the victims and their families.
Reacting to the successful rescue of the abducted pupils and teachers, Ibrahim congratulated Nigerians on their release but said the governor should show empathy by acknowledging the government’s failure to provide adequate security.
Addressing Makinde’s recent call for the United Nations to investigate the abduction, the UN envoy stated that the organisation does not interfere in the internal affairs of member states or investigate domestic incidents.
According to Ibrahim, security remains a shared responsibility of state governments, urging governors across the country to strengthen measures to protect lives and property.
He also appealed to the Oyo State Government to award scholarships to the rescued pupils, covering their education through all levels, and to provide support for the families of the teachers who lost their lives during the incident.
Ibrahim added that if the state requires financial assistance to support the victims, it should make its needs known, noting that many Nigerians would be willing to contribute towards securing the children’s future.
