Former Governor of Osun State and National Secretary of the African Democratic Congress, Rauf Aregbesola, on Thursday called on voters in Ekiti State to use the forthcoming governorship election to “rescue” Nigeria from what he described as failing leadership.
Aregbesola made the appeal during the party’s grand finale rally held in Ado-Ekiti ahead of the June 20 governorship poll, warning that the country had “entered one chance” and required urgent redirection through the ballot.
Addressing party supporters, the former minister decried worsening economic hardship and governance challenges, insisting that citizens must take responsibility for shaping the nation’s future by voting out underperforming leaders.
He said, “Nigeria has entered one chance. The only way out is through your votes. You must come out en masse and choose a better path for yourselves and your children.”
Aregbesola specifically urged women, youths and other eligible voters not to stay away from the polls, expressing optimism that the ADC would secure victory in the election.
The party’s governorship candidate, Ambassador Dare Bejide, also assured residents of his readiness to deliver on campaign promises if elected, pledging people-oriented governance.
Bejide called on voters to troop out in large numbers on election day to support the ADC, saying the party remained committed to addressing the state’s socio-economic challenges.
The rally attracted key party leaders, including National Chairman, Chief Ralph Nwosu; former Edo State Governor, Oserheimen Osunbor; and National Financial Secretary, Dr Mani Balarabe Rufai, among other stakeholders.
Speaking at the event, a former Ekiti State Commissioner for Information, Akin Omole, alleged that the party faced obstacles in accessing public facilities for its campaigns but maintained that the challenges would not hinder its electoral chances.
Similarly, the ADC senatorial candidate for Ekiti North, Senator Funsho Ayeni, said the large turnout at the rally reflected growing public dissatisfaction with insecurity, poverty and what he termed poor governance.
Ayeni urged voters, particularly youths, to utilise their Permanent Voter Cards to demand accountability, stressing that the ballot box remained the most potent tool for change.
The Ekiti governorship election is scheduled to hold on Saturday, June 20, with political parties intensifying last-minute campaigns across the state.
