Atiku Demands Full Disclosure Of Coastal Highway Payments As He Questions Tinubu’s Alleged $20bn Loan Plan

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has challenged President Bola Tinubu to explain changes to the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway and disclose the full financial details of the project.

Atiku raised the concerns in a statement issued on Monday, October 12, by Phrank Shaibu, Director of Strategic Communication of the African Democratic Congress Presidential Campaign Council.

He questioned the decision to reroute sections of the highway, demanding details of the original contract, revised design, payments already made and the cost implications of the changes.

“When the route changes, the price must be opened. When the work changes, the payments must be explained,” Atiku said.

The former vice president also asked Tinubu to clarify an allegation that the Federal Government was preparing to seek a loan of up to $20 billion from the National Assembly, reportedly linked to payments involving the highway project and contractor Hitech Construction Company.

Atiku further alleged that some lawmakers were facing pressure to approve the proposed borrowing and called for an investigation into the claims.

He demanded the publication of the original engineering studies, revised plans, contract variations and payment records, insisting that Nigerians deserved a full account of public spending.

His comments have sparked reactions on X, with some users describing the highway as a wasteful project and others criticising the government’s reliance on loans.

The alleged $20 billion borrowing plan and claims of pressure on lawmakers remain allegations raised by Atiku, rather than independently established facts.
