Babcock University, Ilishan-Remo, Ogun State, has launched a drone surveillance system as part of measures to strengthen security on its campus and neighbouring communities amid growing security concerns across the country.
The institution said the initiative, executed in partnership with information technology firm, New Horizon, would provide aerial surveillance extending up to a 30-kilometre radius beyond the university, enhancing the safety of students, staff and residents of surrounding communities.
Speaking during the unveiling of the security infrastructure at the university’s main campus, the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Afolarin Ojewole, said the institution remained committed to protecting lives and property while maintaining an environment conducive to learning.
He noted that the university’s responsibility went beyond academic excellence to ensuring the safety and well-being of members of its community.
According to him, the drone surveillance project is designed not only to secure the university but also to contribute to the safety of neighbouring communities.
“Babcock is not only concerned about academics, but about character and security. While we are watching over our own, we are also looking out for those around our community so that together we can have an ecosystem where people can sleep peacefully at night,” Ojewole said.
The Vice-Chancellor disclosed that the university plans to procure two additional drones to expand surveillance coverage and improve emergency response capabilities.
He also revealed that discussions were ongoing to incorporate drone technology and robotics into the institution’s academic programmes to equip students with practical skills in emerging technologies.
The Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of New Horizon, Mr. Tim Akano, described the drone donation as another milestone in the long-standing relationship between both organisations.
Akano said the partnership, which has spanned over 22 years, had continued to deliver value to both institutions.
He explained that the newly deployed drone is capable of flying at an altitude of up to 7,000 feet, providing real-time aerial imaging and clear night vision to support rapid security response.
“We are delighted to donate this drone to Babcock University to further strengthen its security architecture. This partnership has lasted over two decades, and we believe the university has the capacity to maximise the technology,” he said.
Akano added that the collaboration also includes training university personnel in drone operation, maintenance and repairs to ensure sustainability of the project.
The launch ceremony was attended by representatives of the Nigeria Police from the Ilishan Division, led by the Divisional Police Officer, CSP Betty Ajuwon, officials of the Ilishan Development Association and members of the university management.
The university said the initiative reflects its commitment to leveraging modern technology to address evolving security challenges while fostering a safer learning environment for students and the host community.
