A Bahraini court has sentenced a person to five years in prison and fined the individual 2,000 Bahraini dinars over social media posts supporting and praising what authorities described as Iranian terrorist attacks against Bahrain.
Bahrain’s Public Prosecution announced the sentence on Tuesday, saying the court also ordered the confiscation of the items seized from the defendant.
According to the prosecution, cybercrime investigators detected a social media account containing images, videos and comments that allegedly endorsed and praised the attacks.
The prosecution said investigators traced the account to the defendant and seized electronic devices, which were examined by technical specialists as part of the investigation.
The defendant was not identified in the statement.
The court found the defendant guilty based on the evidence presented by prosecutors and imposed the five-year prison sentence, the fine and confiscation order.
Bahrain has intensified prosecutions over social media activity linked to Iran following the escalation of tensions and attacks in the region, with authorities warning against content they consider to support or promote attacks against the country.
