Bauchi State Governor, Bala Mohammed, has signed into law a bill establishing 29 additional local government areas across the state.
The development, contained in a document obtained by Daily Trust, marks a major administrative expansion aimed at bringing governance closer to the people and improving development across communities.
With the new law, Bauchi which currently has 20 constitutionally recognised local government areas will have a total of 49 LGAs, pending ratification by the National Assembly as required by the 1999 Constitution.
According to the document, the Acting Deputy Clerk of the Bauchi State House of Assembly, Musa Yerima, has already forwarded the law to the Senate Committee on Constitutional Review for approval in the ongoing constitutional amendment exercise.
In a letter addressed to Senator Barau Jibrin, Chairman of the Senate Committee on Constitutional Review, Yerima wrote:
“I am pleased to inform you that the Bauchi State House of Assembly has passed into law a bill to provide for the creation of 29 new additional local government areas in Bauchi State, 2025.”
He explained that the newly created LGAs would remain inchoate until the National Assembly enacts a law to formally include them in the Constitution, in accordance with Section 8(5) of the 1999 Constitution.
“The said law is hereby forwarded to the Chairman, Joint Committee on Constitution Review, National Assembly, for further necessary action,” Yerima added, noting that the legislation was passed in line with Sub-Section 3 of Section 100 of the Constitution (as amended).
With an estimated population of about 10 million people, Bauchi will, upon approval by the National Assembly, become one of the states with the highest number of local government areas in the country.
