Benue youths foil kidnap attempt, rescue abducted businesswoman in Nasarawa

Benue youths from Agatu community on Tuesday night, May 5, 2026, thwarted a kidnap attempt and rescued a woman abducted by gunmen in Achepe village, Akpanaja Council Ward, within the Ekye Development Area of Nasarawa State.

The riverine settlement is located opposite the Lower Basin area of Makurdi.

An eyewitness, Tanko Barnabas, said the attackers invaded the village around 11:30 p.m. and abducted a local businesswoman, identified as Mrs Inyakwu.

Barnabas explained that the victim’s cries for help alerted residents, prompting youths in the community to quickly mobilise and pursue the kidnappers.

Despite gunshots fired by the assailants, the youths reportedly confronted the suspects, overpowered them, and rescued the woman.

Two of the suspects were arrested at the scene and rifles were recovered, while others fled into nearby bushes.

The swift response by the youths, led by their community leader, has drawn praise from residents, who commended their bravery and vigilance in protecting the area.
