Bomb Threat Grounds Aircraft At South African Airport

An aircraft carrying 184 passengers was held at King Phalo Airport in South Africa’s Eastern Cape province on Wednesday following a reported bomb threat.

The passengers safely disembarked after an unidentified caller allegedly reported that there was a bomb on board the aircraft.

The South African Police Service (SAPS) deployed a multidisciplinary team, including bomb disposal officers, explosive-detection dogs, hostage negotiators, disaster management personnel, airport security officials and emergency medical services.

Police said the aircraft was being held as part of security procedures while investigations into the threat continued.

Authorities had not confirmed whether an explosive device was found on the aircraft as of the time of reporting.

Police urged members of the public to avoid speculation while investigations continued, adding that further information would be provided as it became available.
