Lagos politics has taken a dramatic turn as prominent politician Funso Doherty has officially emerged as the governorship candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) ahead of the 2027 elections.
The announcement was confirmed after Doherty publicly disclosed his acceptance of the party’s nomination via his official X account on Friday, where he expressed deep appreciation and commitment to the task ahead.
In his statement, he described the nomination as both an honour and a responsibility, saying he accepted it with “humility, gratitude, and a strong sense of purpose.” According to him, the focus now shifts to building a better Lagos that works for all residents, not just a select few.
Doherty emphasized that his vision for Lagos is rooted in inclusivity and effective governance, stressing that the state deserves leadership that prioritizes the needs of every citizen. He also declared that the real political battle and developmental work have officially begun, hinting at a vigorous campaign ahead of 2027.
He further rallied supporters with a passionate message, saying it is time for change and using the Yoruba phrase “O ti ya,” meaning “it is time,” to signal readiness for the political race.
Adding fuel to the political excitement, the Director of New Media and Strategic Communications for the NDC, Theo Abu Agada, publicly confirmed Doherty’s candidacy. In a bold statement on X, he declared that the emergence of Doherty marks a new political era in Lagos.
According to him, the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) is now facing serious competition, suggesting that the 2027 election could mark a major political upset in the state.
With this development, Lagos political space is already heating up as parties begin early positioning, alliances, and strategic messaging ahead of what is expected to be a fiercely contested governorship race.
