A major political shake-up has hit Abia State as a former top figure in the All Progressives Congress (APC), Nduka Anyanwu, has officially defected to the Labour Party, sparking fresh reactions across the state’s political space.
The announcement was made by the Labour Party in Abia State through its publicity secretary, Emenike Iroegbu, who confirmed that the party’s state working committee paid a courtesy visit to Anyanwu shortly after he made his decision to switch allegiance.
Anyanwu, a former member of the APC National Executive Committee and once the governing board chairman of the Administrative Staff College of Nigeria (ASCON), is also known as one of the founding figures of the APC in both Abia State and at the national level.
Explaining his defection, he insisted that no one pressured him into leaving the APC. According to him, his decision was purely based on what he described as visible development and transformation taking place under the administration of Governor Alex Otti.
He praised Otti’s performance, stating that only someone ignoring reality would deny the progress being made across the state. He added that even critics, in private conversations, reportedly admit that the current administration is performing well.
Anyanwu went further to claim that the ongoing development in Abia has changed the perception of the state, even within his own family. He noted that his wife has become a strong admirer of the governor due to the improvements she has witnessed, while his children are now eager to return home because of the state’s growing appeal.
He concluded that staying in a different political party no longer made sense to him, given his admiration for the governor’s leadership and achievements.
In a bold political move, he also revealed that he is not coming alone. According to him, he is joining the Labour Party with over 700 supporters from his political structure, saying his decision is not driven by personal gain but by a desire to contribute to what he called the continued development of Abia State.
