*A Birthday Tribute to His Excellency, Chief Willie Obiano*
Some birthdays are dates on a calendar. Others become occasions for posterity to pause, remember, and celebrate a life of consequence.
Yours belongs to the latter.
Happy birthday to my great boss, my boss of all bosses, His Excellency, Chief Willie Obiano, former Governor of Anambra State.
I have often wondered whether leaders truly understand the full measure of the footprints they leave behind. Perhaps not. For the greatest measure of a leader is rarely found in what he intended to achieve, but in what history eventually remembers him for.
Yours is a birthday that will resonate in perpetuity, because of the outstanding leader you were, the remarkable human being you remain, and the inspiration you continually represent to all of us who genuinely seek to become greater leaders tomorrow.
You led with a heart unusually open to humanity.
You believed in people. You gave young people extraordinary opportunities to prove themselves. You were never intimidated by brilliance; rather, you sought it, embraced it and gave it room to flourish. In a political environment where insecurity can sometimes make leaders afraid of those who are gifted, you demonstrated that a leader’s greatness is not diminished by the brilliance of those around him.
You made their brilliance part of your own legacy.
Your journey from the boardrooms of executive banking to the Government House in Awka is itself a remarkable testament to preparation meeting responsibility. But what makes your story particularly compelling is that your leadership trajectory was never merely about the vision you saw while in office.
It is posterity that will ultimately define the true magnitude of your strides.
Posterity will remember the infrastructure, the institutions and the decisions.
It will remember the airport that was delivered with uncommon speed and determination.
It will remember the investments in education, healthcare, security and human development.
But beyond these physical monuments, I believe posterity will remember something even more profound:
*the heart behind the leadership*.
The man who occupied the highest office in Anambra State was, at his core, a man who cared deeply about people.
And perhaps that is why, after all the noise of politics fades, what remains most enduring is not the office you occupied, but the lives you touched, the people you empowered and the younger generation of leaders who watched you closely and learned.
I was privileged to serve you closely through eight extraordinary years: first as your Chief of Protocol and subsequently as your Chief of Protocol and Deputy Chief of Staff.
Those years were more than years of service.
*They were years of tutelage*.
I saw leadership up close. I saw the weight of decisions. I saw the complexity of power. I saw the humanity behind the office. I saw the triumphs, the pressures, the difficult moments and the lonely moments that accompany the highest responsibilities.
And through it all, I came to understand a truth that cannot be learned from books:
*Leadership is ultimately about the kind of person you remain when power gives you every opportunity to become someone else*.
You remained yourself.
Your Excellency, the years may have taken you away from Government House, but they have not taken you away from the hearts of those who served with you and genuinely believe in what you represented.
Retirement from public office is not retirement from legacy.
And certainly not from history.
There are leaders whose tenure ends when they leave office.
*Yours does not*.
Your tenure has entered that more difficult and more enduring territory: the judgment of posterity.
And I have no doubt that posterity will be kind to you.
Because history is often harsh with those who seek power for themselves, but remarkably generous to those who use power to build something that outlives them.
Today, therefore, I celebrate not merely a former Governor.
I celebrate my great boss, my teacher in leadership, a man with an extraordinary heart of humanity, and a principal whose journey continues to teach those of us privileged to have been close to it.
May your years ahead be filled with peace, excellent health, family, laughter, fulfilment and the rare privilege of watching the seeds you planted mature into forests.
May you enjoy, to the fullest, your well-served retirement, free from the burdens of office and surrounded by the love and respect you have earned.
And whenever the history of Anambra’s journey through this era is written, may your name occupy the place that belongs to those who served, built, empowered and left something behind.
Happy Birthday, Your Excellency.
Your office was for eight years.
Your influence is for much longer.
Your tenure ended.
Your legacy did not.
And for those of us who had the privilege of serving you, one thing will remain forever true:
*We did not merely work for a Governor. We served a man whose leadership became part of our own education in the difficult art of leading others.*
