A chilling domestic tragedy has left residents of Akiode Ibogun, Ogun State, traumatised after a Celestial Church of Christ shepherd, Bidemi Odukoya, allegedly hacked his wife to death during a midnight marital confrontation before reportedly throwing himself in front of a moving truck hours later.
The shocking incident, which occurred in the early hours of Monday, August 31, has transformed what residents described as a quiet community into the scene of one of the most disturbing domestic tragedies in recent memory.
Odukoya, the shepherd of Iri Orun Parish of the Celestial Church of Christ, allegedly attacked his wife at about 2am at their residence in Ogooluwa community, Akiode Ibogun, in Ifo Local Government Area.
Residents said the woman was allegedly attacked with a machete and wooden stool, dying at the scene.
But the horror did not end there.
The couple’s 14-year-old son, identified as Daniel, reportedly raised the alarm after discovering the attack, drawing neighbours to the house.
A neighbour, Oluwatoyin Oseni, said residents rushed into the compound and allegedly found the woman lying lifeless in a pool of blood.
She reportedly said Odukoya was still holding a cutlass when residents confronted him and allegedly told them that he was also “as good as gone.”
Before anyone could establish what he intended to do, the shepherd reportedly disappeared from the community.
What happened next has left residents struggling to comprehend the sequence of events.
Around 7am, information reportedly reached the community that Odukoya had surfaced around Coker Junction, along the Ifo axis of the Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway.
Witnesses reportedly said he repeatedly crossed the busy expressway before sitting on the road median.
He allegedly later ran towards an approaching truck.
The impact reportedly killed him instantly.
Within barely five hours, a marital dispute had allegedly claimed the lives of both husband and wife.
Residents have linked the deadly confrontation to allegations of infidelity involving both partners.
The community youth leader, Seun Adelana, alleged that Odukoya had accused his wife of having an affair with another man, while there were also allegations that the pastor himself was involved with another woman.
The allegations, according to Adelana, contributed to the confrontation that eventually turned fatal.
However, the claims remain allegations and have not been independently established by the police.
The tragedy has stunned the Akiode community, particularly because residents said the couple had lived there for about nine or ten years and were generally regarded as friendly and respectful.
The Baale of Akiode Ibogun, Chief Taiwo Akiode, described the incident as unprecedented in the community.
He said he was alerted around 3am and initially struggled to believe that the shepherd could have killed his wife.
But when he visited the residence, he reportedly saw the woman lying in a pool of blood.
The community leader said police subsequently arrived, documented the scene and began preliminary investigations.
Fresh accounts emerging after the tragedy suggest that the couple’s marital problems may have been more serious than many residents realised.
A neighbour, Oseni, alleged that the couple had experienced repeated quarrels and that police had previously intervened in some of their domestic disputes.
Another community leader, Chief Oluwasegun Adeboye, said residents only began hearing details of the couple’s alleged marital problems after the deaths.
There were also reports that the couple had taken their dispute to court and had been advised to return home and attempt to resolve their differences.
They were reportedly expected back in court on Wednesday, September 2.
They never made it.
By Monday evening, both were dead.
In another haunting twist, the husband and wife were buried beside their three-bedroom home on the same day.
The wife was reportedly buried around 5pm, while Odukoya’s remains were brought back to the community later in the evening and buried beside her after 7pm.
Two graves now reportedly stand beside the home where the couple lived and raised their three sons.
The same compound that once represented family, marriage and worship became the final resting place of both husband and wife.
The Ogun State Police Command has confirmed the incident and commenced investigation.
The Deputy Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Opeyemi Oluborode, said the case file was being transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) to establish the actual circumstances surrounding the deaths.
For residents of Akiode Ibogun, however, the questions remain painfully unanswered:
