The Coalition of Citizens Groups for Good Governance has commended Bayo Ojulari, Group Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL), over the planned 30-day petrol discount and other initiatives aimed at improving the company’s transparency and operational efficiency.
The coalition said the discount could provide temporary relief to households and businesses facing high fuel prices and rising transportation costs.
In a statement issued on Saturday and signed by its National President, Dr Nath Oguche, and Chidumga Odinkalu, the group said the initiative, alongside the introduction of self-service smart pumps and efforts to strengthen transparency, reflected ongoing changes in the company’s operations.
It said the measures demonstrated the importance of institutional reforms that improve service delivery and provide practical benefits to citizens.
“The planned fuel discount is a welcome development, particularly at a time when Nigerians are grappling with high fuel prices and rising transportation costs. We commend NNPCL and its leadership under Bayo Ojulari for supporting measures that could ease some of this pressure on citizens,” the statement said.
The coalition added that initiatives addressing the economic challenges faced by ordinary Nigerians deserved attention, particularly when accompanied by measures to improve efficiency and accountability.
It also commended what it described as NNPCL’s efforts to reduce corruption and strengthen transparency in its operations.
“Beyond the fuel discount, we are encouraged by the innovations being introduced under Ojulari’s leadership, including self-service smart pumps and efforts to strengthen transparency in the company’s operations,” the group said.
According to the coalition, improvements in the operations of NNPCL, a key institution in Nigeria’s petroleum sector, could have implications for the wider economy and the daily lives of citizens.
The group, however, said public institutions should be assessed not only on their policies and announcements but also on the tangible improvements they deliver.
It noted that reforms aimed at curbing corruption, improving operational efficiency and making services more accessible could help strengthen public confidence in the national oil company.
