Cody Gakpo requests privacy after loss of unborn son

Liverpool and Netherlands forward Cody Gakpo has asked for privacy after announcing the loss of his unborn son during his partner’s pregnancy.

The 27-year-old shared the message while on international duty at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, where he has helped the Netherlands qualify for the Round of 32.

His partner, model Noa van der Bij, confirmed the heartbreaking news on Saturday in a post on social media, revealing that the couple’s baby boy had died before birth. Their second child had been due in October.

Couple announce heartbreaking loss

Van der Bij shared a photograph of the couple holding hands over a blanket and a knitted hat as she announced the family’s loss.

“With broken hearts, we share the devastating news that our baby boy passed away during pregnancy,” she wrote.

“Thank you for your love and support. Elijah Raphael Gakpo. Forever loved. Forever our son.”

She later posted another message describing a visit to church with the couple’s young son, Samuel.

“We went to church to light a candle. Afterward, we walked to the church playground with our son Samuel.

“There was only one other child there. His name was Elijah. There could not have been a more beautiful sign from God. He reminded us that our little boy is never far away.”

Gakpo asks for understanding

Gakpo also issued a brief statement, requesting space for his family as they deal with the tragedy.

“This is an incredibly difficult time for our family.

“We kindly ask for our privacy and space. Thank you for your understanding.”

Despite the personal loss, Gakpo has featured in all three of the Netherlands’ group-stage matches at the World Cup, scoring twice in his country’s victory over Sweden as the Dutch secured qualification for the knockout rounds.

The Netherlands are scheduled to face Morocco in the Round of 32 on Tuesday in Mexico, although it remains unclear whether Gakpo will be available for the match.
