President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, on Tuesday, received the remains of the late former President Muhammadu Buhari at the Umaru Musa Yar’Adua Airport in Katsina, as Nigeria prepares to bid farewell to the statesman.
The coffin, draped in the Nigerian national flag, arrived amid tight security and a solemn atmosphere. President Tinubu was joined by Vice President Kashim Shettima; First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu; Chief of Staff, Femi Gbajabiamila; and several other top government officials who stood in silence as the casket was lowered from the aircraft.
Also in attendance were the widow of the former president, Aisha Buhari, and members of the late leader’s immediate family, who received condolences from well-wishers during the brief ceremony.
Following the reception, the funeral entourage departed for Daura, Buhari’s hometown in Katsina State, where he is expected to be buried later today in accordance with Islamic rites.
The late President Buhari, who served as Nigeria’s military head of state from 1983 to 1985 and later as a democratically elected president from 2015 to 2023, died in London on Sunday at the age of 82 after a prolonged illness.
The federal government has declared Tuesday a public holiday in his honour, while national flags across the country continue to fly at half-mast in observance of a seven-day mourning period.
