Controversial Nigerian singer Portable has come to the defense of Nigeria’s First Lady, Oluremi Tinubu, following the backlash that trailed her recent comments about unemployment among women.
The First Lady had come under fire on social media after advising unemployed women to explore small-scale businesses such as selling roasted corn or frying akara as a means of generating income.
Reacting to the criticism during an appearance on The Honest Bunch Podcast, Portable said many people had misinterpreted her message. He maintained that there is dignity in starting small and building a business from the ground up.
The singer pointed out that countless successful individuals in Nigeria were raised by parents who sustained their households through petty trading and other modest ventures. According to him, such businesses should not be looked down on, as they can provide a stable source of income and eventually grow into larger enterprises.
Portable further shared an experience from a visit to London, where he claimed to have seen people selling roasted corn while living comfortably and driving luxury vehicles. He used the example to emphasize that profitability is not determined by the size or appearance of a business but by how well it is managed.
His comments have since added a new dimension to the ongoing conversation surrounding the First Lady’s remarks and the realities of entrepreneurship in Nigeria.
