A legal practitioner, Emmanuel Ogar has encouraged the citizens to always mount lawful pressures on their leaders and representatives to carry out their assigned duties.
Ogar reacted yesterday when his client, Mr Fred Obi was invited by security agencies for his involvement in the potest by at the University of Cross River State, UNICROSS, two days ago.
Ogar insisted that there is nothing wrong in calling out public office holders who have failed or neglected to performance their public duties.
“And where they are slow to doing so, we must put lawful pressures on them to do the right thing and always hold them accountable for their actions and inactions. Any public office holders who cannot take criticisms must resign”, stressed Ogar.
He frowned at public office holders using state security apparatus to intimidate citizens who call them through their constitutionally guaranteed freedom of speech and expression.
He condemned the conduct of the complainant, believed to be the leadership of the school, against his client, saying their actions appear calculated to deploy state security apparatus as an instrument of intimidation.
He said such has posed a grave threat to the constitutionally guaranteed fundamental rights of citizens, including those of his client.
The lawyer, however, appreciated the DSS for the professionalism, restraint, and courtesy demonstrated in the course of engaging with Obi.
In his statement after honouring invitation by the Service, Obi himself also commended them for professionalism during the session with him.
“I had a brief session with the Director who was very professional and knowledgeable in handling issues.
“I was informed that there were multiple calls to the Service that I led or incited the students protest in Calabar, which was the reason for my invitation. I was advised on several issues and I can say that the Director was fatherly in his approach and displayed high level of comradeship,” he stated.
