The Minister of Defence, General Christopher Musa, has cautioned against the rising calls for protests being promoted by some social media influencers in Nigeria, warning that such demonstrations could be vulnerable to hijacking and may lead to violence.
Speaking on recent online mobilization efforts, the minister said there is no restriction preventing citizens from protesting, but stressed that organisers and participants must consider the possible unintended consequences.
According to him, protests that begin peacefully could be infiltrated by bad actors, leading to situations where people could be injured or killed. He urged Nigerians to exercise caution and responsibility when engaging in mass demonstrations.
“I’ve been seeing of recent some social media giants in Nigeria going around trying to rise protests. Nobody is stopping anyone from protesting, but we should always remember the unintended consequences, because these protests might be hijacked and people might be killed or injured,” Musa was quoted as saying.
