The Delta State Commissioner for Secondary Education, Dr. Kingsley Ashibogwu, has been arrested by the police in connection with the death of Unity Ekpevbughe Adeda, a Deputy Director in the state Ministry of Secondary Education.
Ashibogwu was reportedly arrested alongside three other suspects as police intensify investigations into the circumstances surrounding the death of the senior civil servant.
The Delta State Police Command confirmed the development on Monday in a statement issued by its spokesperson, SP Bright Edafe, stating that a total of five persons are currently in custody over the case.
The identities of the three other suspects arrested alongside the commissioner had not been disclosed as of the time of filing this report.
The police also declared two officials wanted for questioning in connection with the investigation. They are Mrs Clementine Ufuoma, Director of Basic and Secondary Education, and Clement Apia, the driver attached to the Commissioner for Secondary Education.
According to the police, the arrests and declaration of the two individuals as wanted form part of efforts to establish the circumstances surrounding the death of Adeda and determine whether anyone bears criminal responsibility.
The command said investigations remain ongoing, while the circumstances leading to the Deputy Director’s death are yet to be fully established.
The arrest of a serving state commissioner has added significant attention to the case, but the police have not stated that any of those arrested has been found guilty of wrongdoing.
