The Delta State Police Command has demoted an inspector and a corporal who were found guilty of extortion and misconduct following a viral video of them online collecting money from a motorist through a Point-of-Sale terminal inside a police station.
The command’s spokesperson, SP Bright Edafe, disclosed this in a statement on Tuesday, saying the Commissioner of Police, CP Yemi Oyeniyi, upheld the findings of the orderly room trial of Inspector Augustine Jeremiah and Corporal Miracle Ehirim of C Division, Asaba.
According to the report, the two officers were captured in a viral video on January 13, 2026, receiving money from a motorist through a POS terminal within the station.
They were further charged for disciplinary proceedings, which they were found guilty of disobedience to lawful order, extortion, and discreditable conduct, contrary to the provisions of the Police Act, 2020.
As punishment, Jeremiah was reduced in rank from Inspector to Sergeant, while Ehirim was demoted from Corporal to Constable.
CP Oyeniyi stressed that the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu, unequivocally prohibits the use of POS terminals and other electronic payment platforms within police stations and formations, and that no officer is authorised to demand or receive money from members of the public under any guise.
He warned that anyone caught will face the disciplinary panel. describing the punishment as a deterrent to other officers.
“Any officer found culpable will face appropriate disciplinary action,” the CP warned.
He urged officers and men of the command to uphold the highest standards of professionalism, integrity, and respect for the rights of citizens, while encouraging members of the public to continue reporting cases of police misconduct through appropriate channels, assuring that complaints against corrupt officers would be investigated and handled in accordance with the law.
