Doherty Faults Alleged Multiple Taxation On Lagos Roads

The Lagos State governorship candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Funso Doherty, has criticised the alleged multiple taxation and arbitrary levies imposed on motorists, traders and transport operators across Lagos roads.

Doherty, according to a statement issued by the Lagos State chapter of the NDC on Tuesday, described the system as an entrenched structure of agberoism, allegedly sustained by political interests and used to extract money from ordinary residents.

The governorship candidate argued that the problem goes beyond the activities of individual street-level collectors, alleging that multiple layers of revenue collection have become embedded in the state’s transport system.

He questioned why the practice, which continues to affect the daily lives and economic activities of Lagos residents, has remained unresolved.

Doherty maintained that addressing the problem would require confronting the structures allegedly sustaining it rather than merely targeting the visible operators.

He called for a transparent, accountable and properly regulated transport and revenue collection system that would protect livelihoods, eliminate arbitrary levies and reduce the financial burden on businesses and commuters.

The NDC candidate also demanded answers and accountability, insisting that the welfare of Lagos residents should take precedence over political interests.
