Operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS), in collaboration with forest guards, have intercepted a consignment of medical supplies allegedly destined for fighters of the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) in Borno State, in what security sources described as a major disruption of insurgent logistics operations in the North-East.
The interception was carried out on Friday during a coordinated operation along suspected supply routes within Kaga Local Government Area, a known transit corridor for criminal and insurgent movements through forested enclaves in the state.
Security sources familiar with the operation said the exercise was based on credible intelligence indicating that terrorist logistics couriers were moving pharmaceutical supplies in small batches to evade detection along forest paths frequently used to sustain insurgent hideouts.
According to the sources, the intercepted items included large quantities of antibiotics, anti-malaria injections, strong pain-relief medications, and other essential pharmaceutical products believed to be intended for treating wounded fighters and sustaining combat operations in remote ISWAP enclaves.
Officials also recovered basic consumables reportedly packaged for battlefield resupply, suggesting what investigators believe to be a coordinated effort to replenish insurgents following recent operational losses.
The supplies were allegedly linked to attempts by ISWAP logistics networks to reinforce fighters who suffered casualties during intensified military offensives in the Lake Chad region in recent weeks.
Security analysts noted that the seizure underscores a growing shift in counter-insurgency operations, with authorities now targeting not only fighters and weapons, but also the supply chains that sustain terrorist activities in remote forest settlements across Borno.
Preliminary investigation, according to sources, indicates that the shipment was being moved through fragmented routes in order to avoid security checkpoints and aerial surveillance, a tactic increasingly adopted by insurgent couriers operating in the area.
The intercepted consignment has since been taken into custody for forensic examination, while security agencies have launched a full-scale investigation to identify the individuals, facilitators, and possible collaborators behind the attempted delivery.
A senior security source involved in the operation said efforts were ongoing to dismantle the broader logistics network believed to be responsible for coordinating medical and material support to insurgent camps.
“This is not just about the drugs. It is about the network that keeps these groups alive in the bush. We are tracking every link in the chain,” the source said.
The development comes days after a joint military operation involving Nigerian forces and the United States Africa Command (AFRICOM) reportedly killed 21 ISWAP fighters in an air interdiction mission in Arege, Kukawa Local Government Area of Borno State on June 1.
Security observers say the latest interception may indicate heightened pressure on insurgent groups in the region, as military operations intensify across the Lake Chad Basin and surrounding forest corridors.
Authorities have reiterated commitment to sustaining coordinated intelligence-led operations aimed at dismantling terrorist infrastructure, cutting off logistics support, and weakening the operational capacity of insurgent groups in the North-East.
