A candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress for the Esan West Constituency seat for the Edo State House of Assembly, Rev Olu Martins, has called on the party leader, Senator Seriake Dickson, to ensure equity and fairness in the state.
In an open letter to Dickson, Martins noted that the party needed to consider the views of various groups to be able to do well at the polls in 2027.
He said, “Political foresight and proactive tendencies are one of the major characteristics of an astute statesman and political icon. Fortunately for the Nigerian Democratic Congress, you possess both attributes in abundance.
“Sir, we must implore to finish what you have already started by ensuring equity, balance and fair play as you have always done. Politics, they say is local, so we are privileged as Edo people to have our national leader hail from our geopolitical zone.
As an Esan man and the candidate of the NDC for the Esan West Constituency of the Edo State House of Assembly in the forthcoming elections, winning is important to me and win we will.
“It is on the above premise that myself and several other Esan sons of our great party queued behind Hon John Yakubu to fly the ticket of the party for the Edo Central Senatorial district.
Yakubu is on ground and adept with the politics of Edo State and the Edo Central Senatorial district. He is loved and down to earth naturally currying the favour of many Edo State indigenous people of Esan extraction.”
Martin, a former student Union President of the Ambrose Alli University, noted that for balance and equity, while Yakubu remains the party’s choice for the Senate, the House of Representative ticket should move to the other local government areas which share rights of exchange and representation with Esan North East, the local government of Yakubu.
He added, “It will be politically injurious to leave a whole local government area void of electoral representation when the practice has been to oscillate electoral offices between Esan North East (Uromi) and Esan South East (Ubiaja).
“To do that will be tantamount to a ready disadvantage for us in the Senatorial district who are determined and poised to do whatever is legitimately needful to come out victorious.
“We love your doggedness mixed with compassion but as an old hand in the game, we are sure that you also understand the necessity of a delicate balance which ensures a sense of belonging for all”.
