The Edo State Command of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has uncovered a major illicit drug warehouse in Benin City, arresting a husband and wife allegedly involved in the storage and distribution of narcotic substances.
The Edo State Commander of the NDLEA, Commander of Narcotics Mitchell Ofoyeju, disclosed that the operation was carried out at a residential building along Sapele Road in Benin City, where the suspects, Christian Chukwuka, 32, and his wife, Nwanneka Christian, 33, were apprehended.
According to Ofoyeju, the successful operation followed credible intelligence on the couple’s alleged involvement in drug trafficking.
He described the arrest as another significant breakthrough in the agency’s sustained crackdown on illicit drug activities across the state.
“We arrested a husband and wife, Christian Chukwuka and Nwanneka Christian, at an illicit warehouse where they deal in narcotic drugs.
The arrest and seizure reflect the growing concern over drug trafficking and drug abuse in the state.
Both suspects, who are from Ndokwa in Delta State, were apprehended at the warehouse,” he said.
Items recovered during the raid included twenty-two bags of skunk cannabis weighing 219.5 kilograms and compressed blocks of Canadian Loud, a potent strain of synthetic cannabis, weighing 192.67 kilograms.
One of the suspects, Christian Chukwuka, attributed his involvement in drug trafficking to poverty and unemployment.
He said he was introduced to the illicit trade by a friend after failing to secure gainful employment despite learning truck driving.
“I am a secondary school graduate and trained as a truck driver, but because of joblessness, a friend introduced me to drug trafficking. My wife and I have a set of twins, and the financial burden became overwhelming. If given another opportunity, I will never engage in drug trafficking again,” he pleaded.
The NDLEA Commander confirmed that investigations are ongoing and assured that the suspects would be prosecuted upon the conclusion of investigations.
“Our resolve to combat drug trafficking remains unwavering. We will conduct a thorough investigation and ensure those responsible are brought to justice,” Ofoyeju said.
The latest seizure is considered one of the most significant drug busts recorded by the Edo State Command in recent times, underscoring the agency’s intensified efforts to dismantle drug trafficking networks and curb the spread of illicit substances across the state.
