A group backing former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai has engaged Washington-based advocacy organisation Vanguard Africa to draw international attention to what it describes as concerns over due process, judicial independence and the rule of law in Nigeria following his detention by the ICPC.
The group, the El-Rufai Support Group Association (ERSGA), said the campaign will involve outreach to U.S. government officials, members of Congress, democracy-focused institutions and international organisations. According to the association, the move is aimed at ensuring greater scrutiny of developments surrounding El-Rufai’s case as Nigeria approaches the 2027 general elections.
ERSGA maintains that El-Rufai is innocent and argues that his detention raises broader questions about fairness, democratic governance and the treatment of opposition figures. The group has called on the international community to monitor the situation and support due process.
However, the ICPC has consistently defended its actions, stating that El-Rufai’s detention is backed by valid court orders and linked to ongoing investigations into allegations including money laundering and abuse of office. The commission insists it is following due process and rejects claims of political persecution.
The development adds an international dimension to the legal and political battle surrounding the former governor, which has continued to generate controversy among opposition groups and his supporters.
