Abuja Electricity Distribution Company has said electricity consumers across the Federal Capital Territory, Nasarawa, Niger, and Kogi states will soon receive compensation for Band A customers following the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission’s directive.
Recall that NERC in Band A customers due to a shortage in power supply recorded in February and March 2026.
Electricity customers to be compensated by eleven DisCos across are those who received less than 18 hours within February and March.
NERC had issued an implementation time for the compensation for February 2026, which shall be completed no later than 31 May 2026, and for March 2026, which shall be completed no later than 30 June 2026.
When DAILY POST contacted the Managing Director of AEDC, Chijioke Okwuokenye, for his reaction to NERC’s directives, he assured that the DISCO would start compensating electricity consumers within its franchise.
“It is energy we are talking about; it doesn’t elapse; it will come to our customers soon,” he told DAILY POST exclusively.
He, however, did not tell DAILY POST the exact time Band A electricity consumers would get the compensation.
The compensation is 20 percent of average energy billed for customers in the period under review.
DAILY POST reports that outside Abuja, no electricity distribution companies in Nigeria has officially reacted to the NERC directive.
Recall that Nigeria has continued to suffer from inadequate supply nationwide, with electricity generation stunted around 3000 megawatts and 4500 MW for an estimated population of over 250 million.
Despite poor power supply, Discos earned N597.55 billion from electricity customers in the first quarter of 2026, according to NERC’s data.
On November 1, 2020 NERC had approved 300 percent tariff hike for Band A customers in the grounds that they would get a minimum of 20 hours of electricity supply daily.
