The pupils and teachers abducted from three schools in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State have finally reunited with their families after being discharged from the LAUTECH Teaching Hospital in Ogbomoso, bringing an emotional end to nearly two months of uncertainty for their loved ones. The reunions came after the victims underwent medical treatment, trauma counselling and psychosocial support following their rescue by security operatives.
The victims, comprising 39 pupils and six teachers, were abducted by armed men on May 15, 2026, while attending classes at three schools in the Ahoro-Esiele and Yawota communities of Oriire LGA. They spent 56 days in captivity before they were rescued in a coordinated operation involving multiple security agencies. The operation led to the arrest of eight suspected kidnappers, while several others were neutralised. Tragically, two teachers lost their lives during the ordeal.
Before returning home, the rescued victims were kept under medical observation, received psychological evaluations and counselling, and were formally handed over to the Oyo State Government by the military. While most of the pupils have been discharged, a few remain under medical care for further treatment and observation.
Videos of the emotional reunions have since gone viral, with many Nigerians expressing gratitude over the victims’ safe return while calling for continued support to help them recover from the traumatic experience.
