The Governor of Akwa Ibom State, Umo Eno, has presented brand-new Sports Utility Vehicles (SUVs) to all former deputy governors of the state, while also announcing a pay increase for traditional rulers and enhanced medical care.
The brief ceremony, held at the Government House, Uyo, saw the governor hand over keys to the new Land Cruisers, describing the gesture as an acknowledgment of the former deputies’ sacrifices and commitment to the state’s development. Governor Eno called for their continued support in maintaining peace and fostering an enabling environment for development under his ARISE Agenda.
Some of the former deputy governors present included Ambassador Etim Okpoyo, Noble Lady Valerie Ebe, Mr. Moses Ekpo, and Obong Nsima Ekere, who thanked the governor for the recognition and pledged ongoing support for his administration.
In the same event, the governor swore in Akuku Saviour Sylvester Udofia, the paramount ruler of Abak Local Government Area, as the new chairman of the State Supreme Council of Traditional Rulers (SCTR). Eno reaffirmed his commitment to the welfare of traditional rulers, noting that from October 1, their monthly allowances would be increased. He also approved the appointment of personal assistants (PAs) for each of the paramount rulers.
While Governor Eno described the initiatives as a move to appreciate service and strengthen state institutions, some opposition figures criticized the actions. Comrade Nkaiso Abia of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Eket Senatorial District, suggested that attaching government appointees to traditional rulers was a calculated attempt to politicize the institution ahead of the 2027 elections.
The governor, however, urged the royal fathers to maintain peace and a cordial relationship with their subjects, emphasizing his administration’s unwavering commitment to the welfare of all Akwa Ibom citizens.
